On the occasion of Breastfeeding Week (November 1-7), UNICEF Greece is promoting an information and awareness campaign in clinics, hospitals, institutions and health officials throughout the country, emphasizing the need for collective and coordinated action to promote breastfeeding with the slogan of World Breastfeeding Week: "Supporting Breastfeeding Together".

The main objectives of UNICEF Greece's information campaign for this year's Breastfeeding Week are:

- Highlighting the importance of breastfeeding as a critical first step in a child's life.

- Encouraging young people of both sexes to be informed about the valuable benefits of breastfeeding in today's age.

- Urging obstetric, medical staff and health agencies to support the 10 steps for successful breastfeeding.

An assessment of 194 countries (Global Breastfeeding Scorecard) found that only 40% of children under six months are exclusively breastfed (fed only with breast milk) and only 23 countries have exclusive breastfeeding rates above 60%.

“Breastfeeding is especially critical during the first six months of life, helping to prevent diarrhea and pneumonia, two leading causes of death among infants, especially in developing countries. It is also the period in which the foundations are laid for the child's physical, mental and mental health and development. Breastfeeding mothers also have a reduced risk of ovarian and breast cancer, two leading causes of death among women. However, the mother-child relationship that is built through breastfeeding is just as important," said the President of UNICEF Greece, Sofia Tzitzikou.

"Breastfeeding is one of the most effective - and cost-effective - investments countries can make in the health of their youngest members and in the future strength of their economies and societies," said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. "By failing to invest in breastfeeding, we are failing to support mothers and their babies - and we are paying twice: in lost lives and in lost opportunities."
