It comes from the distillation of the Cymbopogon Nardus plant. It has a fresh, woody, lemony aroma. The essential oil of the plant is obtained by distillation from two species of citronella, Cymbopogon nardus of Ceylon and Cymbopogon winderianus of Java. The main components of citronella essential oil, regardless of the type of plant it is derived from, are citronella, geraniol and lemonene. The characteristic lemony aroma of the plant is due to citronella. The concentrations of the active ingredients vary depending on the plant from which the essential oil comes. It is used in aromatherapy for colds and migraines. In particular, it helps to deal with problems of the nervous system.

SOME INDICATIVE USES

INSECT REPELLENT LOTION - Get "pure" rubbing alcohol and pure aromatherapy oils from an essential oil store or homeopathic pharmacy and mix them together in a bottle. You will need:

• 85ml pure alcohol • 5ml citronella • 5ml lemongrass • 5ml rosemary

For enhanced action: Remove 5ml of alcohol from the recipe and add 5ml of lemon eucalyptus.

HEALING MASSAGE OILS - Purchase a carrier oil, citronella essential oil "neat" or diluted with alcohol or water, other essential oils that "bind" with citronella and are indicated for the problem you want to treat and mix them all together.

DO NOT USE ON SKIN - MIX WITH A BASE OIL 

Caution! Essential oils are never used undiluted directly on the skin, but are added to carrier oils. A safe recommended dosage is up to 2 drops of essential oil per 10ml of base oil. For any other type of use, consult a specialist.
