PROPERTIES OF KELP
Kelp is a large edible seaweed of the genus Laminaria, rich in minerals and vitamins, especially of the B complex. It is cardiotonic and beneficial for the brain, sensory nerves and spinal cord, blood vessels, nails. It has been used successfully in mild hypothyroidism due to its high iodine content. Swelling of the thyroid (goiter) can be due to various causes, such as simple or malignant hyperplasia (cancer) or hyperthyroidism, but it is often due to iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism. In the latter case Kelp can help significantly.
Kelp increases burns and helps with weight loss, while it is considered beneficial in cases of ulcers and hair loss. It is also used against environmental poisoning by heavy metals, such as barium and cadmium, and to prevent the body from absorbing radioactive iodine and strontium 90, elements released during nuclear reactions. It appears to be beneficial (due to the iodine) in sarcoids (benign tumors), erythematosus dermatoses and fibrocystic breast disease. Kelp can be especially useful for vegetarians and those who need to avoid salt, due to the increased possibility of getting insufficient amounts of iodine in their diet.
