Description

The mineral trace element selenium is a key nutrient, necessary for the performance of important biological processes in the body, such as reproduction, synthesis of thyroid hormones, DNA synthesis, immune adequacy and defense against inflammation and oxidative stress.

Selenium intake as well as plasma levels vary depending on the population, soil composition and selenium content, type and amount of food. Foods rich in selenium are Brazilian peanuts, meat of animal organs, poultry, fish, dairy, bread and cereals.

Selenium has antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects and is an essential element for the synthesis and metabolism of thyroid hormones. These actions are implemented through selenium proteins of which it is a key component.

The main selenoproteins are glutathione peroxidase (GPx), which due to its antioxidant activity protects thyroid cells from excess H2Ο2 produced during the synthesis of thyroid hormones and deiodinases that contribute to the deiodination (removal of an iodine atom) of thyroxine resulting in the production of the metabolically active triiodothyronine.

The thyroid gland is the organ with the highest selenium content. Recent epidemiological studies have found that low plasma selenium levels are associated with a higher incidence of goiter, thyroid nodules, and immune thyroid disease such as Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Therefore, selenium deficiency is a risk factor for morphological and functional disorders of the thyroid gland.

Administration of selenium to patients with autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto) with or without thyroxine therapy appears to modify the characteristic inflammatory and immune responses of the disease as seen from the decline of antithyroid antibodies. In addition, supplementation with selenium may improve thyroid's tone.

Supplementation with selenium in patients with Graves' disease and concomitant mild ophthalmic disease improves the quality of life, reduces the severity of ocular disease and slows its progression and is included in the official guidelines of the European

The effect of selenium is also evident in pregnancy where, in addition to the drop in antibodies, there is a delay in the progression of the disease, improvement of the ultrasound image of the thyroid and a decrease in its rate after childbirth thyroid dysfunction and the appearance of permanent hypothyroidism.

According to the results of studies conducted in Greece, the average daily intake of selenium and its average concentration in the serum is lower than the desired limits.

Libytec Pharmaceuticals, evaluating the advantages of selenium administration and considering that it is indeed a trace element of life, today launches SELITOP with the following characteristics:

  • Organic form of selenium with high absorption from the intestine.
  • Oral dispersible tablets. This form has faster disintegration and higher absorption and offers the possibility of administration without water or other liquid even to people with difficulty swallowing, improving compliance.
  • One daily intake regardless of food.
  • Pleasant lemon flavor.
  • Absence of gluten & lactose to avoid intolerance.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of each patient. SELIMA is suitable for long-term treatment while SELITOP is administered to autoimmune thyroid diseases.
