Pycnogenol is an extract from the bark of Maritime Pine. Pro-anthocyanidins (a subclass of the flavonoid family) are the main active ingredient in Pycnogenol.
The first scientist to investigate the biological actions of Pycnogenol was Dr. Jack Masquelier of the University of Bordeaux in France. His research began after studying some historical reports about an unknown ingredient, which was derived from the bark of the Maritime Pine and was used in the Middle Ages to treat scurvy suffered by sailors of that time and focused on the naturally occurring proanthocyanidins of Pycnogenol and in their antioxidant properties. Indeed in vitro studies have shown that Pycnogenol has strong antioxidant properties similar to those of vitamins C and E.
Subsequently, Dr Masquelier created the pine bark extraction process and was awarded for the discovery and definition of Pycnogenol as a free radical scavenger.
Like all Lamberts formulations it is manufactured in the United Kingdom according to the strict standards of Pharmaceutical GMP (Pharmaceutical GMP).
