Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) are plant components of flavonols found in grape seeds (or pine bark). Oligomeric proanthocyanidins, as a group of separate components, got their name from the flavonoid elements from which they come. This category of ingredients is found in high concentrations in the skin and seeds of various plant species. The simplicity of their chemical structure distinguishes these versatile ingredients from the more complex flavonoids they are partially derived from, the simple chemical structure of these ingredients activates rapid absorption into the bloodstream. Many of the studies on oligomeric polyanthocyanidins have used grape seed extracts. Grape seed extracts are commercially available in OPC concentrations up to about 80%.
