D3 5000IU+K2, 60caps

Nutritional supplement that offers the necessary vitamin D3 together with vitamin K2.

In recent years, more and more international interest is focused on D3- or, to put it better, on its lack. In fact, its deficiency has even been described as a 'pandemic', as the world's population, which has levels below its blood level, is constantly increasing.

Η Vitamin D is one fat soluble vitamin which is divided into two valences, D2 and D3, with the second having a stronger effect on the human body. D acts as a steroid hormone and participates in many metabolic functions. It is striking that most of the cells in our body have receptors for vitamin D metabolites. This means that the vitamin contributes in a number of ways to the health of our body, with some examples, maintaining bone health, immunity, and even mental health and mood.

As most people know, although some foods contain vitamin D, the main source of D is the sun: the human body makes up about 90% of vitamin D through the sun's ultraviolet rays. According to international guidelines, for maximum production by the body (approximately 20.000 IU) requires exposure to sunlight, between 10-12 noon for 10 to 20 minutes, from April to October, without any cover from the waist and up.

However, does it not seem absurd to talk about a lack of D, in a country like Greece, where most months of the year the sunlight is abundant, to the point that we have to be protected from it?

And yet! Although we are a Mediterranean people, it seems that the lack of D3 affects us as much as other countries and is a real danger and not… theories.

In fact, in a global study-registration of the levels of the vitamin in the population, it appeared that in northern Europe the percentages of the vitamin are significantly higher than in southern Europe, despite less sunshine!

In a study published in 2017 that collected the results of 107 corresponding studies on vitamin D3 from Southern European and Mediterranean countries, it appears that despite constant exposure to solar radiation, vitamin D levels are significantly low in a large part of the population. .

In a research conducted in Spain - a country with a climate similar to Greece - 169 children with an average age of 9 months were the focus, and the levels of vitamin D3 in their blood were examined. According to the scientists, D3 levels below 30 ng/mL were found in ¼ of children under 2 years of age. The results emphasize the importance of preventive actions for the vitamin during the first years of life, even in sunny Mediterranean areas'.

Correspondingly, in our country, researches as early as 2006 highlight the need for prevention, as measurements both in children and in the elderly predicted a serious deficiency of the vitamin in the population.

Today, a very recent epidemiological study, titled "Increased frequency of vitamin D deficiency in a sample of the Greek and Cypriot population", prepared by the AUTH and the Medical School of St. George UK, International Department of the University of Nicosia, Cyprus and presented at the 45th Panhellenic Congress of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, is now talking about the "Mediterranean paradox": in a sample of the Greek and Cypriot population, 73,07% of Greeks and 69,28, XNUMX% of Cypriots in the sample had insufficient vitamin D levels - even if we are talking about two of the sunniest countries in Europe.

Possible reasons that contribute to vitamin D deficiency are:

  •     Use of sunscreen and clothing for sun protection: perhaps, in fact, the hours that our bodies are actually exposed to the sun are much less than we think. Peoples with strong sunshine throughout the year, such as Mediterranean peoples, tend to be more covered by the sun than peoples in countries with less sunshine (which, of course, doesn't sound unreasonable at all).
  •     Foods: although our country is surrounded by sea, eating fish is not that common. Although the percentages of the vitamin that we get from food are small, it plays an important role, as it seems that the high levels of D3 in countries like Sweden and Norway are significantly consistent with the high consumption of fatty fish and fish oils.
  •     The darkest skin: it seems that in general, dark-skinned people are at greater risk for vitamin D3 deficiency, as the melanin that darkens the skin acts as a protective filter against solar radiation.

Of course, in the above an important role is played by the almost non-existent policies for prevention, as well as the relative ignorance of the issue in our country until now. In fact, when large percentages of Mediterranean women during pregnancy suffer from a lack of vitamin D3, it is plausible that the phenomenon is perpetuated and worsened from generation to generation.

As it becomes obvious, the fact that our country is in the Mediterranean, with the sunny climate most months of the year, does not mean anything, in the end, for the levels of vitamin D in the population. The risk of D3 deficiency, with all the subsequent risks that this naturally entails, is (if not greater) the same for peoples like ours and for peoples with less mild climates. The same goes for the need for knowledge, prevention and safeguarding from its consequences.

In addition to vitamin D3, it is vital to mention the role of vitamin K, as they act synergistically.

Η vitamin K. discovered in 1929 as a essential component for blood clotting.

But there are two forms of vitamin K:
  •     Η Vitamin K1 or else phylloquinone which is mainly found in green leafy vegetables and is the one that plays a decisive role in blood clotting.
  •     Η Vitamin K2 or else menaquinone, which is mainly found in animal foods such as egg, whole milk and butter as well as fermented foods such as yogurt, cheese, natto (a type of soy). The most important forms are MK-4 and MK-7. But apart from food, K2 is produced by the bacteria in our intestinal flora and then circulates throughout the body.

In case someone cannot consume fatty foods or they are not available in their environment, then taking supplements is a good alternative. Its benefits may be enhanced when combined with the simultaneous intake of vitamin D3 as the two vitamins have been found to have a synergistic effect.
