European Propolis
You have surely heard about propolis. You may not know that there is not only one propolis but there are different ones in both color and activity, depending on the plants the bee visits. But let's look at things from the beginning.
What is propolis?
The word propolis comes from the Greek words "pro" and "city", which means a substance that is placed before the entrance of the city (hive) for the defense of the bee. The propolis is collected by specialized workers, on the hottest days of the day, visiting plants rich in resinous, gummy and balsamic substances. Using their jaws, they detach it in small pieces from the buds of the plants. After processing these substances using various secretions of their glands, they place it in the pollen baskets on their hind legs. They transfer it to the hive and use it directly in various tasks within the hive. Depending on the chemical composition of propolis, its physical characteristics also vary, such as: its color, aroma, taste and composition. Its color varies: from yellow, orange, green, (Brazilian propolis), to brown and black (European propolis).
