Methylcobalamin (B-12) actively plays an important role in the formation of red blood cells, in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, as well as in the regulation of the immune system.
According to international literature, methylcobalamin has metabolic benefits, and potential therapeutic applications not offered by other forms of vitamin B-12. Although cyanocobalamin is the most common form of vitamin B-12 in dietary supplements, it becomes necessary to convert it to methylcobalamin or adenosylcobalamin.
Methylcobalamin is involved in the synthesis of methionine. This helps lower homocysteine levels, which are recognized as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It is also important for the formation of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin.
Nutritional deficiencies, enzyme defects, and tissue abnormalities can reduce the body's ability to synthesize these active forms. Cobalamin deficiency can cause megaloblastic anemia, peripheral neuropathy, irritability, dementia, depression, increased risk of myocardial infarction, and stroke.
The biologically active form of Methyl B-12 is a potent donor of methyl groups in the myelin sheath, which insulates nerve fibers and regenerates damaged neurons.
