Licorice is a plant widespread in the region of Asia and Europe. It is native to Southwest Asia and Southeast Europe, specifically Italy, Spain, and Persia, and is now widely cultivated throughout the world. In Greece, we find it native in the region of Macedonia but also in other regions.
The main component of licorice is glycyrrhizin, which is 50-60 times sweeter than common granulated sugar. Licorice contains sterols, flavonoids, polysaccharides, coumarin and asparagine. In addition, it contains glycyrrhizic acid, combined with calcium and magnesium salts, as well as steroid hormones (phytoestrogens).
Licorice is traditionally used to treat gastrointestinal ailments, heartburn, indigestion and gastritis. It is considered a traditional method of treating the symptoms of asthma, dry cough and chest pain, as it is considered to act as an expectorant, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and mild hepatic agent.
