L-tryptophan is one of the 22 protein amino acids and one of the 8 essential amino acids in the human diet. However, it is not synthesized by the body and must be obtained either through eating food or taking nutritional supplements.
L-tryptophan plays many important roles in the body's mental function, as it has the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. It is known for its role in the production of nervous system chemical messengers, particularly those associated with relaxation, calmness and sleep. It is an important neurotransmitter/hormone found naturally in all organs of the body.
L-tryptophan deficiency, especially during periods of stress, dramatically reduces serotonin levels. Additionally, low levels of L-tryptophan lead to depression, anxiety, insecurity, hyperactivity and insomnia.
