Cascara Sagrada, which means "sacred bark" in Spanish, is obtained from buckthorn, a species of native tree-shrub of North America and has been used by Native Americans for centuries. The powder created by this particular bark acts as a powerful laxative and is thought to strengthen the walls of the large intestine.
It consists of compounds called arthroquinones, whose action is laxative because they cause peristalsis, that is, contractions in the intestines and colon. These contractions activate the bowels. Cascara Sagrada also contains emodin and aloe eomin, ingredients that cover and strengthen the walls of the digestive system, as well as other - non-harmful - ingredients that do not have a laxative effect.
Cascara Sagrada also consists of other important components, such as hydroxy-anthraquinone glycosides called cascarosides (about 70% of their total consists of A, B, C and D and other glycosides in small concentrations) with a laxative effect.
Some other important components are resins, tannins and lipids, which make up the majority of the other components of the bark. Along with these properties, Cascara sagrada is considered, among other things, to improve the tone of the muscles of the colon walls.
In addition, this herb stimulates the secretion of minerals and releases liquid lubricants in the large intestine. These fluids soothe and strengthen the intestinal walls.
