PROPERTIES OF CHONDROITIN SULFATE

Chondroitin sulfate (heteropolysaccharide) is one of the main components of cartilage, which act as "pads" between the bones of the joints, preventing their friction. Cartilage can wear down, due to age or heavy strain (e.g. with constant lifting of heavy objects) leading to osteoarthritis, a condition that can be very painful. Chondroitin sulfate has an important preventive and therapeutic effect against osteoarthritis, increasing the production of hyaluronic acid and blocking the action of enzymes that cause the breakdown and degeneration of cartilage.

According to the results of seven double-blind clinical studies lasting at least 4 weeks, there was a significant reduction in pain in osteoarthritis groups receiving chondroitin sulfate compared to placebo groups (JAMA, 2000, 283:1469-75). Other studies lasting 1-3 years showed a halt or marked reduction in cartilage wear and improvement in joint motion in the chondroitin sulfate groups compared to the placebo groups.

Chondroitin sulfate also appears to have activity against atherosclerosis, according to animal studies and one human study.

According to the study, 60 coronary heart disease patients were given 2.000 mg of chondroitin sulfate daily for 900 days. During this time only one in 60 patients suffered an acute coronary event, while in the group not receiving chondroitin (placebo group) the number of acute events was 16 times greater (16 in 60) (Atherosclerosis, 1972, 16:105-18) .

Other animal studies have shown that chondroitin sulfate helps heal broken bones. Similar studies with humans do not exist so far.

Chondroitin sulfate is considered extremely safe. However, there is a theoretical possibility that it has anticoagulant properties and therefore increases the action of anticoagulant drugs.

PROPERTIES OF GLUCOSAMINE

Glucosamine (amino-monosaccharide) is a structural component of collagen, which in turn is the main component of connective tissue. A type of connective tissue is also cartilage, which is found in joints, tendons, nose and ears.

In the joints, the cartilages form a thin, slippery, soft, but very durable coating, to ensure the comfortable movement of the bones, without them coming into direct contact and rubbing. Glucosamine contributes to resilience, while chondroitin contributes to cartilage elasticity.

Cartilage wear and tear, whether due to age, old or recent injuries, or overuse, causes osteoarthritis with bone changes due to friction and inflammation, and with possible complications in other joint diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Glucosamine, taken as a supplement, is almost completely absorbed by the small intestine, reaching the joints it helps to maintain the structure of the cartilages and their better functioning. Research has shown that glucosamine has antioxidant and possibly anti-inflammatory properties.

According to the results of six double-blind studies lasting at least 4 weeks, there was a significant reduction in pain in osteoarthritis groups receiving glucosamine sulfate compared to placebo groups (JAMA, 2000, 283:1469-75).

In a double-blind, randomized study of knee osteoarthritis patients, 1.500 mg of glucosamine sulfate or 1.200 mg of a well-known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug were administered. The chemical worked faster, but at the end of the 8-week study there was no difference between glucosamine and the chemical in terms of pain relief.

If we now take into account the serious side effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as stomach bleeding and further joint damage, the superiority of glucosamine becomes apparent, which, apart from its analgesic effects and arresting cartilage degeneration, appears to it also helps in the regeneration (regeneration) of the cartilages and in the overall improvement of joint function.

It should be noted, however, that in order for the cartilage to regenerate, the chondrocytes, i.e. the cells that produce cartilage and are scattered within the cartilage, must work. If the osteoarthritis is too advanced and the chondrocytes have been destroyed, then cartilage regeneration is impossible.

Glucosamine is often used together with chondroitin or other ingredients that have a role against osteoarthritis, such as vitamin C, MSM, manganese, aloe vera, etc. According to an experimental study, the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin gives better results than glucosamine or chondroitin alone.

Two forms of glucosamine have been used the most in clinical studies and are considered to give the best results: glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride.

CONTRAINDICATIONS - PRECAUTIONS

There is some possibility that glucosamine may lower glucose tolerance levels. This was observed in animals when glucosamine was given intravenously, but not when it was given orally. In any case, diabetics who want to take glucosamine would do well to consult their doctor and monitor their blood glucose levels so that, if necessary, they can modify their medication dosages.
