Vitamin B6 is an important water-soluble vitamin of the B complex which belongs to a family of three chemically related compounds which includes pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. Vitamin B6, takes part in more metabolic reactions of the body than any other Vitamin B complex and is characterized by important biological actions as it contributes *:
• in the normal synthesis of cysteine
• the normal functioning of the nervous system, the immune system and metabolic processes aimed at producing energy
• in the normal metabolism of homocysteine, proteins and glycogen
• in normal psychological function
• to reduce fatigue and tiredness
• and in the regulation of hormonal activity
It is worth noting, however, that 25% of women follow a diet that provides them with less than the recommended daily dose of this vitamin (the recommended daily dose of B6 is 1.2mg, which is probably much lower than the optimal dose).
