Lactase (lactase) is a necessary digestive enzyme for the breakdown of the main carbohydrate of milk Lactose (lactose). Lactase is produced by the body in the small intestine. In cases of reduced or zero production of lactase from the small intestine, the unbroken lactose is transported to the large intestine where it is fermented. This leads to the production of hydrogen, carbon dioxide and organic acids resulting in gas production, contraction of the muscles of the intestinal wall and causing diarrhoea. The severity of the clinical manifestations depends on the degree of enzyme deficiency.
Lactose intolerance is not life threatening, but it does lead to quality problems, as avoiding dairy products can lead to dietary restrictions. Enzyme potency is measured in Food Chemical Codex (FCC) units. The Food Chemical Codex is the universally valid standard for determining the activity of plant enzymes. This standard describes the potency of enzyme activity in units (iu), better than the other widely used standard, which uses the weight of enzymes to measure enzyme activity (measurement in mg). This product is of high power and can only be compared with similar products of other manufacturers, which include as a measure of enzyme activity the units (iu) and not the weight (mg).
