Liposomes have several benefits in terms of providing vitamins and nutritional supplements:

• protect the active substance from oxidation and degradation at acidic pH of the stomach
• increase absorption and bioavailability compared to free and other conventional pharmaceutical carriers (ie tablets, suspensions and capsules).

The liposomes

The liposomes belong to the colloidal dispersion of transport systems of bioactive molecules which have their transport capacity, improving their efficiency. The dimensions of the liposomes depending on the method of their preparation and the physicochemical characteristics of their structural units are in the order of nanometers up to the order of a few micrometers.

Historically, in the early 1960s, there was a tendency to study the biophysical properties of colloidal systems which had lipid and phospholipid composition, with the aim of understanding the biophysical functions of cells. Biophysicist AD Bangham studied lipid colloidal dispersions to simulate cell membranes and study their functionality.

Liposomes, since they are prepared from structural materials like those of our cells, have advantages related to thefriendliness' as to the tissues of man. They have the ability to transport lipophilic bioactive molecules which do not dissolve easily in aqueous media and therefore have absorption and bioavailability problems, e.g. vitamins, curcumin etc. but also water-soluble or amphiphilic molecules, improve in terms of their dissolution rate and absorption through the gastrointestinal tract.

Liposomes can and do transport bioactive substances and improve their penetration through the gastrointestinal tract and are effective 'vehiclestransfer of bioactive molecules.

Η liposomal technology and especially the innovative technology of supramolecular phospholipid complexes with a lipid bilayer structure can improve the therapeutic effectiveness of nutritional supplements and are an innovation in this field, giving high added value to the final dosage form.
