Description: The previous product in hypoallergenic tablets of 500 mg.

Common use: One tablet a day. (The tablets are for swallowing, not for chewing).

PROPERTIES OF BROMELIN

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme (to be precise: a mixture of mainly proteolytic enzymes) derived from pineapple and/or pineapple stalks.

Pineapple is still used today as a traditional medicine in tropical regions, to aid digestion, detoxify the body, improve skin texture and speed up wound healing.

Bromelain is useful both as an excellent digestive aid and for a wide range of other conditions.

In Western countries, bromelain has been used therapeutically since 1957, and more than 200 related studies have been published. Some of the early studies gave negative results, due to the use of enteric tablets and/or inappropriate dosages.

Of particular value is the anti-inflammatory effect of bromelain, since in many cases it can completely or partially replace anti-inflammatory drugs, without the serious side effects that these often have on the gastrointestinal system.

DIGESTION AID

Bromelain aids in the digestion of protein foods, while increasing the absorption of nutrients from foods and nutritional supplements. It is worth noting that it is active, both in the stomach and in the small intestine, due to its ability to remain active within a wide range of pH fluctuations.

In cases of pancreatic insufficiency or pancreatectomy, bromelain has been used with good results as a substitute for trypsin and pepsin. The combination of bromelain with pancreatin and ox bile gives even better results.

Bromelain also gives positive results in cases of pancreatitis, due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

CANCER

Bromelain has been used in anticancer treatments, both as an adjuvant and (less) as a main therapeutic agent. Its anti-cancer properties are indisputable, and according to some researchers (Nieper et al.) they are due to its ability to dissolve the fibrous envelope of cancer cells, thus making them vulnerable to the action of the immune system.

In a study done in Germany, it was found that the administration of bromelain, along with the use of chemotherapeutic drugs, such as vincristine and 5-fluorouracil, in often sub-toxic doses, led to a significant regression of tumors (Krebsgeschehen, 1976, 1 :1-15). According to the researchers, dosages below 100 mg of bromelain are ineffective, while in some cases up to 2.400 mg are needed for maximum results.

In another study with patients with various cancers, 600 mg of bromelain was administered daily for 6 months to several years, alongside standard medication. The cancerous masses of ovarian carcinomas were dissolved, while most breast cancers as well as metastases were significantly reduced in the bromelain group compared to the control group that received the drug alone (Agressologie, 1972, 3:261-74 ).

A recent study with breast cancer patients showed that bromelain stimulated defective monocytes (T-cells) that exhibited reduced cytotoxicity. T-cytotoxic cells are among the most important means of the immune system for the destruction of cancer cells.

Another recent study in mice showed that bromelain had the ability to reduce the metastasis of lung cancer cells.

Although the anti-cancer properties of bromelain are proven and possibly very important, however, the relevant research so far is too limited to assess the extent of the utility that this natural substance can have in clinical practice.

ANTIBIOTIC PROPERTIES

According to some studies bromelain is as effective as antibiotics in treating infectious conditions, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, pyelonephritis, cutaneous staphylococcus, perirectal abscess (Exp Med Surg, 1961, 19:143-60).

On the other hand, bromelain increases the concentration (and thus the effectiveness) of antibiotics such as amoxicillin, tetracycline and penicillin in blood serum, many tissues and body fluids (e.g. saliva, mucus, cerebrospinal fluid, urine , fallopian tubes, ovaries, gall bladder, epithelial tissue) (Drugs Exp Clin Res, 1978, 4:45-48).

Finally, animal studies have shown that bromelain has significant antibacterial activity Escherichia coli (Colobacillus) and Vibrio cholerae (cholera bacterium).

SPORTS MECΩYOU

Bromelain is widely used for sports-related injuries. Of the many studies that have been published, perhaps the most interesting is an old study of boxers. The study involved 74 boxers who were given bromelain and the same number who served as a control group.

Bruising marks disappeared completely within 4 days in 58 of the 74 boxers who received bromelain, while the remaining 16 took 8-10 days for the same effect.

Of the group of 74 that did not receive bromelain (control group) only 10 had complete disappearance of the bruises within 4 days, while the remaining 60 required 7-14 days for the same effect (Practitioner, 1960, 203:206).

DIFFERENT

Double-blind studies have shown that bromelain speeds healing time and reduces pain, swelling, and bruising after surgical procedures, including operations on the mouth and vulva (vulgiotomy). This is attributed to possible analgesic properties, but mainly to the anti-inflammatory properties of bromelain. It is recommended to administer both after and before surgery.

Bromelain increases the breakdown of fibrin, thus reducing the chances of clot formation. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that it prevents platelet aggregation and is therefore used with considerable success in cases of thrombosis and angina pectoris.

In a related study with 73 patients with acute thrombophlebitis, bromelain, in small daily doses, along with analgesics, reduced pain, swelling, redness and high skin temperature, while increasing the ability to work.

Bromelain has mucolytic properties and has therefore been used in respiratory tract ailments. It has shown some beneficial effects in chronic bronchitis and, according to a double-blind study, in acute sinusitis.

Bromelain, in combination with papain, has been used successfully for period pain (dysmenorrhea). The effect is probably due to an effect on prostaglandins, with a consequent relaxation of the smooth muscles and reduction of cervical spasms.

Finally, favorable results have been reported from taking bromelain in cases of edema (500 mg x 3 times a day, on an empty stomach) and cellulite.

Observation: Bromelain is generally best taken on an empty stomach (at least two hours before or after a meal) with a glass of water. However, if it is used as a digestive aid, it should be taken after a meal, along with a little water.
