Listerine

Introducing Listerine

The story of LISTERINE® it begins over 130 years ago, at the beginning of modern medicine. It all started in 1860, with the work of Sir Joseph Lister.

The English doctor and surgeon was applying at that time the theories of the famous scientist Louis Pasteur: theories according to which invisible germs might be the cause of various infections.

In 1865, Sir Joseph Lister became the first surgeon to perform surgery in a room that had been sterilized by spraying antiseptic into the air. In the 19th century, this led to a significant reduction in patient mortality rates. In 1879, Dr. Joseph Lawrence created a unique composition in his laboratories, inspired by the research of Sir Joseph Lister, and named it LISTERINE®.

He then went on to partner with pharmacist Jordan Wheat Lambert, and together they created the company Lambert Pharmaceutical. This company produced and sold LISTERINE, which was used as a disinfectant in operating rooms and as a solution for cleaning wounds.

LISTERINE today is used as oral solution for daily use. Our product aims to provide better oral hygiene to everyone, complementing the action of brushing. Over a billion people worldwide use LISTERINE®.
